Natural Park
Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel is surrounded by one of the most celebrated natural parks in Portugal – Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.
Classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty, the park is distinguished for its landscape, geology and flora and fauna.
It’s also renowned for its architectural, historical and cultural heritage.
Impressive natural features include the gigantic cliffs overlooking Arrifana Bay and the landmark Pedra da Agulha, or Needle Rock.
More than 100 scarce and endemic plant species thrive in the park. Similarly, the variety of birdlife here is outstanding.
The park is endowed with a rich archaeological legacy, most obvious of which are the ruins of the 10th-century Moorish castle at Aljezur.
Elsewhere, a number of cliff-top sea defences built by the Portuguese during the 17th century remain in surprisingly good condition.
