Birdwatching in Sagres
Sagres is a very special region. Not only is the surrounding landscape extremely beautiful, but it is also one of the most bio diverse regions in Europe. Within the area there are an extraordinary diversity of habitats, from beaches to forests, estuaries to sand dunes and hundreds of square kilometres of untouched national park. All of these habitats are home to a unique collection of fauna and flora; however the main attraction in the autumn months is the unsurpassed number of bird species.
At the south-western most tip of Europe, Sagres is the final resting point before Europe’s migratory birds fly south for the winter. As a result, there were over 100 different species recorded in just three days at last year’s inaugural birdwatching festival. Among the birds noted were many treasures such as the Imperial Eagle, Black Vulture, Black Stork, Eleonora's Falcon, the Bonelli's eagle, the Great Shearwater, red-necked Phalarope, Dotterel, among others.
For the second time already the Municipality of Vila do Bispo, in partnership with the Association Almargem and SPEA and sponsored by Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel, has organised a Birdwatching festival in Sagres during the first weekend of October, with field trips, boat trips, lectures, workshops and interactive games. The festival was a great success and has shown once more the huge potential for birdwatching fans in particular and nature lovers in general!
